The crate method is one which often finds success. Using a crate to reinforce positive behavior (as opposed to using it to punish) dogs will find comfort in going to their "room. " Eventually, dogs will realize that relieving itself indoors is negative, and the animal will instead choose to relieve itself outdoors.

Crate training is the easiest way to housebreak a dog and is also useful for a variety of other reasons. First housebreak your dog with the crate and limited, supervised time outside of the crate. Once your dog is crate trained, move on to a small room and then add rooms until your dog has the run of the house.

When I trained my dog I kept her in a crate at night until she was housebroken. During the day make sure the dog gets out often.
