If your lawn is overrun with weeds you probably need to rototill the entire thing and then put down a weed killer in the spring. Then you need to reseed the entire lawn with a new grass - or put in sod. Once the grass grows roots, fertilize to keep weeds out.

If you are willing to start from scratch, completely strip the yard and do not water it, letting everything die off. Then clear everything remaining and reseed the lawn. If you want to try and save the existing lawn, try starting with a generic weed and feed fertilizer from your local home supply store.

The best way to do it (if you have the money) is to round-up the yard, till it and start from scratch. A cheap way to do it is to buy a weed but not grass killer and spread it through your yard several times a year.

You might start by just trying to get your lawn healthy so the grass can overgrow the weeds. Make sure not to cut your grass to short. Set you mower blade on high. When the grass is taller it prevents the weeds from getting the sunlight they need. Fertilize your lawn and pull weeds as they grow.

Go to your local gardening store and buy a mix that kills weeds. Scott's makes some good stuff. You just spread it on your lawn.

Cut/mow existing weeds and rake up. Apply a selective herbicide that will not kill grass. Wait a couple of weeks then dethatch, aerate, and overseed with new seed.
