Lent is a reenactment and repeat of the sacrifice of Jesus of 40 days in the desert. He gave up food and water. To remember and to help prepare for Easter, we give up something important to us for these 40 days, from Ash Wednesday until Palm Sunday (Easter Sunday).

To explain Lent to children, one must begin with the concept of giving things up. All children can relate to not having something they want. Have them imagine being willing to give up something they want in order to have a better relationship with God.

Explain that Lent is the time before Jesus sacrificed himself for us. So, it is a holy time where we think about and try to understand that sacrifice by giving up something ourselves.

You tell them that they are giving something up to better understand what Jesus suffered while on the cross. That this is the time of year when Jesus suffered.

During Lent we get ready for the resurrection by remembering Jesus' suffering, often by giving up something or doing something extra, and by telling God we're sorry for our sins.

"Lent" comes from the Old English "length" meaning the season of lengthening light; "Easter" comes from the Old English "Spring". In Lent days lengthn and new life comes. In Lent we receive God's light and warmth, and new life in the Resurrection. Historically, it was when the church restored people who had fallen away, and prepared people for baptism.
