You are going to need to loosen the tention bolt and it will loosen the belt to be able to take it off. Once you take the belt off you can put the new one and tighten the tortion bolt until the belt is tight and has some rebound when you press on it with your finger.

The accessory drivebelt in a 1997 escort is a serpentine belt- there's just one belt for the whole system. You need a serpentine belt tool, you can rent one at most auto parts stores. Apply tension using the tool to the belt pully, slip the belt off. Easy!

It is called your serpenteine belt and is hard to change do to little space. lossen the tensioner and then remove the old belt. it will be difficult todo and you will get frustrated just keep trying until it is out then put the new belt on and put the tension pulley back in place

Remove the top 2 bolts that attach to the motor bracket. Loosen the bolt on the bottom. This will allow the alternator to pivot. Replace belt and tighten bolts.
