If the lawn tractor has been used quite a bit then the belt is probably stretched. The best thing to do in that situation is to replace the belt. Lawn tractor belts have very hard lives. By shortening the belt you run the risk of a belt failure. A broken belt can leave you stranded or cause tractor damage.
