Prevention is the best thing possible but sometimes not enough. Sealing the entrance to their dwelling space and trapping them is a great option. Repellents such as peppermint or catnip oils can be placed in their areas. Rats and mice especially hate these fragrances and will leave. Traps are another option. Using poison should be a last resort.

make sure the area is clean and free of food. Then purchase some form of rodent trap or poison. You can buy traps that range from humane to lethal at most stores.

You can do a few things: make sure there are no easy access areas/holes in your house, place snap or "block" traps, or call an exterminator.

That depends on the type of rodent. Mice or rats can be handled effectively by mousetraps, while a gopher or groundhog may require poison.
