I think I need to switch fabric softeners.

Don't pour the fabric softner on the clothing. Either use a Downy Ball or try and pour the softner on the side of the drum. Mix up the cloths.

Take a bar of non deodorant soap, dampen the fabric softener stain and then rub the bar of soap over the stain. Rinse using a damp cloth and repeat.
