First of all, eliminate the sources of the rat infestation like any kind of food you have from seeds to yesterday's leftovers. Make sure to remove their shelter and cover next. The only safe way to get rid of rats is to use an ultrasonic devices or a cat. Traps and poison are very more efficient but not really safe.

Getting rid of rats without killing them is tough. There are traps you can buy out there that will allow you to release them somewhere else.
