You have to go somewhere that can put you in touch with the places that your profession is for that is willing to accept entry level positions so that you can build your knowledge and experience on the job so you can keep getting better at your profession as well as gaining hands on knowledge.

The first place to start is thinking of what skills your degree in professional writing has given you. Once you know your skills and abilities, you can assess what sort of jobs would suit you. Start to search online for jobs for writers.

You begin a career with a mildly useless degree like professional writing by starting at the bottom. If you want to work in publishing, get a job as a secretary or mail room clerk at a publishing office. If you want work as a writer, get a real job, and write for free in your spare time.

There are several jobs for those with an English degree that tend to get overlooked. 1. Technical librarian 2. Editor or 'reviewer' of an online publication 3. With a little background research on search engine function, help websites do 'search engine optimization' 4. English teacher for the adult level, especially one on one conversation practice

Be open to job opportunities which may not match your degree. Few English majors or philosophy majors actually work directly in those fields. Some professional writers write press releases or company manuals as a day job and spend their spare time working on more creative writing for possible publication.
