How do you get badges in Pokemon?

The only way is to fight gym leaders and defeat their pokemon. Normally if you're in the right city with right levels you'll be able to defeat them fast enough. Just remember to travel around to different cities, so you can get more badges so you can handle higher leveled pokemon.

Unless things have changed since I played Pokemon, you get badges by traveling from town to town and defeating that town's Gym Leader in a battle.
