First step in finishing sheetrock is to paint on a primer coat. Then you can paint over that with any type paint.

First you have to cover any holes you used for screws with tape of filler. Next coat the sheetrock with a primer so the paint will stick to it.

First fill in screw holes and mud/tape your joints. After that dries lightly sand then apply a coat of mud working from the middle out. Sand and repeat as needed.
