Crab grass is something you need to tackle in the spring or you'll never eliminate it. There are crab grass fighting fertilizers available at the home improvement store. Go get a bag and fertilize just as the grass is starting to turn green.

Pre-emergent herbicides can be applied to prevent it from growing from seed. The directions should tell you the best time to use it, so that it doesn't get washed away too early or applied too late in the season. Maintaining a healthy lawn will also help prevent crab grass from growing or coming back.
