Turning the strings pegs with your left hand and playing the correspondent string with the bow allow you to hear the pitching notes. If you are not like Mozart who had a perfect pitch ear it is only possible to reach the right note for each string using an electronic tuner.

Violins are notoriously difficult to tune properly. Get a tuner which sounds all string pitches G,D,A,E. Also, have some resin on the bow before you start and check the tension.

You twist the pegs until they are at the right frequency. You can do this by ear if you have a good one, or there are machines that will tell you how far to twist, which are called tuners.
