Lie detection can be spotted through people's facial expressions. Rapid blink, broken eye contact, excessive swallowing and inappropriate affect can be signs of deception. Be vigilant for fidgeting, inappropriate sweating, a person that repeats questions (to buy time) and inconsistent storytelling. That said, a person that has every detail a story rehearsed might be lying too. Actors are professional liars.

Some classic behaviors people exhibit when they are lying: they avoid eye contact, they sweat, they gesture overly with their hands, they touch parts of their face. Often liars will makes their stories more complex than necessary or will add more and more detail as they retell the lie.

To be completely blunt, there is no 100% guaranteed way to detect lies. However, devices/techniques such as polygraphs, voice stress analyses, and fMRIs can provide somewhat accurate responses.

The best way to detect lies is body language. When people are lying they often avoid eye contact. They also tend be very stiff and not smile much. People also tend to be vague and will have a hard time telling you the same story. When people lie they have a hard time telling you events in reverse order.

You can learn to recognize 'micro emotions', or emotions that appear very quickly before an individual is able to control or hide them.
