Many artists use a combination of free hand drawing and computer graphics to create cartoons for both print and video. Tools are required for both and there are a variety of art supply stores and many free down-loadable programs available. A drawing tablet and scanner for your desktop will be essential either way.

A cartoon is a drawing and many people start out by using 'found art' by by using existing photos, drawings, and etc. made by other people.

To create a cartoon an artist must first imagine an idea. This idea may involve a narrative structure comprising a multi-panel story or just be a simple sight gag without a longer plot attached to it. Once the idea is established, the cartoonist must select the proper tools: pens, etc.
