Colour should be mixed with 10% volume peroxide and water and applied over hi-lited hair areas only for 15 minutes to even tone. Rinse and partially dry. Then colour should be mixed as directed. Apply to roots first, then apply over entire hair for 20 - 30 minutes. Testing for coverage after 20 minutes. Rinse and style.

Get a dye with a comb in the kit. Clairol has kits like that--get a color somewhere between your highlights and the rest of your hair color, then apply the color evenly. You can go over the highlights; they'll still be lighter than the rest, or skip them. The kits are pretty much idiot-proof.

You will need a warm semi-permanent hair color that is one shade lighter than your natural hair color with red or gold to it. You will also need a permanent color that is as close to your natural hair color or one shade darker. So that it is neutral in tonal value so the outgrowth is nearly invisible.

If you are coloring your highlighted hair a darker color, you can dye your hair at home with a gentle, low peroxide color. Be sure to use conditioner so your hair doesn't feel like hay. If you are coloring your hair a lighter color than the lightest highlight, go to a professional salon and do not attempt this procedure yourself.

You can color highlighted hair just like you would normally but remember that the highlighted areas are going to absorb color faster than other non-highlighted parts of your hair will.

You can color highlighted hair the same way you would normal hair. If you use a permanent hair dye, it will contain a lightener and a deposit color. No matter your current hair color, the chemical will lift to a certain level, and then deposit the same color all over. You may use a primer if you wish.

If you want to go darker, highlighted hair needs to be "filled". This is a process of putting the red and yellow tones back into the hair before you color so that your hair doesn't turn green or grey. If in doubt, use a color with a red or gold base in a shade lighter than your target color.

Since highlighted hair is damaged it will absorb more of the haircolor. Coloring highlighted hair can be unreliable so it is best to go to the salon and have your stylist do it.

No matter what color you dye it, unless it's a lot darker, the highlights are still going to show through and at least add some dimension to your hair. Also, where your highlights are, the hair there will tend to soak up color more quickly. You might have to dye it more than once.

You can use regular hair dye to cover it. You will probably need to re dye it every few months until the highlights grow out or else they show up.

If you want the best results you need to bleach your hair and then color them because colors will be much more bright and beautiful.

If you want to put an all over color on already highlighted hair, just be aware your old highlights will show through on the new color, but will look natural.
