Well start by removing the egr valve and giving it a good cleaning with some solvent. Then clean any port in the exhaust or manifold that you can access. A long handle flexible brass brush would probably come in handy.
Usually you can use some part cleaner and a scrub brush to get most of the deposits off. You might have to goo with something stronger like brake cleaner.
