Probably the easiest way would be to not use any service that comes to you, either by door to door or through the phone. The best way to keep safe is to ask people you know and trust who has done their trees and to call them yourself. That way you can check them out before their get there

You can look up a business in the Better Business Bureau. You can ask friends if they have any businesses to recommend. Lot of tree service scams going around? Really?

After you have a recommendation from a friend, start your research. Call the company and ask if you can call one of their customers. Call the customer and ask thousands of questions. Word of mouth goes a long way. Don't hire anyone until you check them out. It's a shame but there are people ready to scam you.
