They may only look like a piece of tape, but nasal strips are slightly stiff and springy, and act to pull open your nostrils. If you are congested up beyond your nose bone, they cannot do anything, but they do pull the nostrils open, so air flows in unimpeded. A plain piece of tape would have no effect.
