With pay as you go cell phones, you purchase minutes as you use them. Say you wanted to talk to someone for 20 minutes one night, you buy 20 minutes on a card which you can buy at wal-mart, then transfer the card onto the phone with a verification code which then puts 20 minutes on the phone.

It entirely depends on how much you use the phone. If you are getting a cell phone for emergency use only for example, you would go for the pay as you go phone. I would also suggest this for a childs use. If you talk every day, I wouldn't suggest this.
