How do obtain duplicate birth certificates?

My family lost theirs in a move.

It depends on where you live. In the United States, birth certificates are managed by the states. Look online at the state government web site for THE STATE YOU WERE BORN IN. That's critical. It has nothing to do with where you live. Many states provide copies for free.

Contact your local county health department. If you live in a smaller town or city try contacting the records department at your local city hall.

You can go to your local County Clerks office (ours is in the court house) and you can buy another copy from them. You just need to show prrof that it is you.

I had a baby two years ago and though I fillef out the all the paperwork at the hospital, i had to go to the reistery to pick up the actual birth certificate. My guess would be to go to the registery in city where you were born, have some form of ID
