Well it varies depending on the system. Typically a disk is loaded into the system and the codes are selected. Then you load the game and it applies the cheats.

Insert the Game Shark memory card into your console. Transfer data from an existing memory card onto the Game Shark Memory card (or save directly to it).

you save your cheats and gliches on it so when you load your saved game it will also activate your codes.
