Question by  Smythe (81)

How do I troubleshoot top-end-noise problems on my motorcycle?

I have a Sportster.

As with any repair that requires skill, if you consider yourself a novice I would suggest either first consulting your car manual, or talking to your local car mechanic. For a job like this make sure you have the tools you need: Sockets, Allen Wrenches, and matching parts of same-brand.

use a long screwdriver with the handle on your ear, put it on the engine and locate the source of the noise.

Well if you had described the noise then I may have been able to help you out. It could be a lot of different things.
