Puppies generally misbehave because they are bored. It is best to have a fenced in yard where the puppy will be able to run and play so that it will be able to burn off some of that energy and still be safe from other animals and cars. Be sure to have a large supply of toys.

Teaching puppies you are the pack leader and setting up his boundaries is very important. Crate training will keep him out of trouble when you are unable to supervise him. Positive reinforcement (rewarding him when he does something right) is a great training method. Remember a tired dog is a good dog - exercise is very important.

Puppies, like babies, need clearly defined boundaries. The best way to keep them out of things (while you are home) is to attach them to you with a leash hooked to your belt, then you can immediately correct the undesired behavior. While you are away you can use a crate.

Training puppies to behave first requires consistency. It is important to consistently use the word no for behaviors that you do not want. It is also important to provide an option to help the puppy with natural behaviors. If he chews give him acceptable things to chew. If all else fails there are obedience classes.
