Open the tailgate halfway and check the tailgate cable. If it isn't support the tail gate, just remove the top part of the cable.

Remove the top part of the cable. Open the tailgate and locate tailgate post pivot. On the slotted opening lift the tailgate upward and then to right. Remove it gingerly.
