First of all see what you need to do with camera? Your main usage will it be video or stills? If stills then will u be going for DSLR, PS or compact camera. Once u decide then u need to see the budget.

To figure out which Canon digital camera (or any other brand for that matter) would be best for you, visit an electronics store or the electronics department of a store where they have knowledgeable sales people and models set up for you to play with. This way you can get a feel for what features you like.

It depends on whether you want a DSLR or a point and shoot. If you want a DSLR, go for the cheapest one available. It's more sensible to invest in a lens. If you want a point and shoot then go for a model that Has image stabilization.
