I think that you must ask the rental company where you are renting the tux from. They are the professionals and you want to make a great impression when picking up your date for the prom. Most men only wear a bowtie for weddings and black tie events so your father may not know how.

If you've never tied one before and no one who lives with you can help you, try looking at You Tube for a tutorial. They show it step by step.

If you don't want to wear a clip on tie, having your mother fashion a good old fashioned square knot with an old fashioned tie is the best. Cross the right side over the the left crossing both. Then bring the right side from the back through the cross to the front.
