Question by  udaipur (219)

How did the standard necktie win out over the bolo tie and the bow-tie?

those other types of ties look strange, but did they always?

I think this is a very interesting question... those other ties may look weird, but that is just a cultural view of them... i can easily imagine a world where neckties look weird, and bow-ties were normal. my guess is was just one of those strange twists of history.

The bolo-tie and bow-tie are fairly recent creations. The original neck-wear of gentleman was the cravat, which spawned the others, the most recent being the bolo-tie.

The bow tie is too cute for most men. The bolo tie is too foreign, especially for Americans. The standard necktie is preferred; it makes men professional and serioius.

Unless you are wearing a tuxedo, any female can tell you that the bow tie reeks of nerdiness! Bolo ties are fine only if you are in a country band or going to a country western dance. The standard necktie allows you to show both taste and personality, letting women get a glimpse of who you are.

I don't think it was ever an even race... Bowties were only used in certain circumstances (ie with tuxedos), and bolo ties were regional (in the southwest), so the standard necktie was "out in front" from the beginning.
