First, you need to have a bootable disc that you need for you to be able to boot to DOS mode. Once you boot to DOS, you can use the command fdisk and it will start formatting the hard drive. It will delete all the content of the hdd.

The best and easiest way to go about reformatting a hdd is to insert your Windows installation disc if you have one and boot to it, once you've botted to the disc let it go through the setup phase then it will get to a part where it will let you formatt the drive.

If it is the only hard drive in the system, boot up with a boot utility such as Paragon Partitioning Utility or a Linux LiveCD (Live CDs are free Linux operating systems that can be run from a CD without installing to computer). Both of those have utilities for formatting a hard drive. In Linux, you want to use fdisk.

Depends on the OS. In windows, find the hard drive under My Computer and right click on it. Select "Format", verify the choices (usually just leave them alone), and lick Start. Under DOS, type in "format c:", where c: is the drive letter of the hard drive you want to format.
