How do I go about painting formica countertops?

First you will need to scuff up the surface with an abrassive such as sandpaper or steel wool. Then apply a primer. I would suggest using something like Kilz this will adhere to surface better and help prevent it from bleeding through. Next apply the paint.

Lightly sand, and clean with acetone. Use an epoxy paint or even an oil based enamel paint. You could also use a pebble looking paint but that requires polyurethane afterward.

There are very specific paint for over painting a formica countertop. The paint is a combination of paint and dye. The most important step is preparing the counter by lightly sanding before and between coats. The paint is made by Glidden and quite expensive. The paint is custom formulated for color and texture.
