In order to obtain a taxpayer ID needed for a living trust you will need to contact the IRS. The best number to reach them for this is 1-800-829-1040. And typically they will be able to provide you with the ID number over the phone.

You can download the form from the IRS and either fax or mail it. You need to have the legal name of the trust to fill out the form. Also you'll need the name of the trustee, address and social security number of the trustee. You should also check with your state to see if they require a form.

If you are the creator of the trust, donate your funds to the trust and receive income generated by the trust. Then you simply use your own Social Security Number. Please refer to Internal Revenue Code § 1. 671-4 and § 301. 6109-1.

There is no need anymore to file form SS-4 with IRS. You can apply online through the IRS Website IRS. GOV and they will ask certain validation questions and lead you through the process. At the end they will assign a number.

Under present law, you generally will not need a TIN for a living trust. In minority of instances where you might, you will need an EIN, IRS form no. ss-4.
