The joints just get worn out with time and you have to replace them. They are fairly easy to take out although they do require some time. The knocking that you hear means they are worn out.

Typically you cannot rebuild or repair a worn cv joint. More than likely you will need to replace the entire half-shaft assembly. This means removing the wheel and some suspension components to get to the shaft. Then you can remove it and install an new shaft and re-assemble everything.

If the cv shaft is loose and making noise then it will need to be replaced. This means the wheel needs to be removed and the shaft must be pulled so a new one can be installed.

If it recently started it may not have begun to damage itself. You can get a joint repair kit from your local auto parts store that will fix the problem with a minimal cost.
