If possible try to contact a relative. If this is not possible check local papers of city he died in and his home town. You may have to check the archives. Look under death notices and obituaries. SS death index may help also.

The first thing you can do is go to the Social Security death index and put in as much info that you know for sure. When you do this remember they come up in geographical order, as to where they were issued their social security number.
