MOst people dont try to do this. Usually speaking male fish are much more attractive than female fish. male fish are usually smaller than females as well. If you can, take a opicture of the fish and take it to a pet store they should be able to properly identify or give you a guestimate.

It totally depends on what kind of fish you have. In live bearers the male has a long slender fin on his lower side. The females usually have a dark spot on their bottom about half way back. In egg layers, each type is different and some are almost impossible without a trained eye.

Examine the vent region of the fish which is between the anus and the anal fin. The vent is the opening where eggs and sperm are produced. The female vent is larger for most species of fish. Other ways depend on the species of the fish. Many fish show sexual dimorphisms in coloration, size, markings, and fin size or shape.
