On typical flues there is a metal arm hanging down approximately one to two feet below the flue that operates the mechanism. Otherwise use a broom to push it up.

Because there are hundreds of different fireplaces built by thousands of different people, there is no one way to close a fireplace flue. Taking a flashlight, look into the throat of the fireplace. Once you spot a heavy, metal lever, raise it up slightly, and then pull down.
