get tools, cleaning supplies and screw driver. Remove conditioner covers and clean first with rag and spray. Then remove air filter and throw out. Then with brush clean inside of pipe. Then taken new air filter(making sure you place the filter right side up). Then close vent and the job is done.

Start by taking a duster and reaching in as far as possible to get the big pieces of dust. This can be followed up with a shopvac with a long extension tube. You can finish off the job by wiping inwards as far as possible with a wet rag, and then wiping the grate.

Remove the screws from the vent cover to provide more access. I use an old shop vaccum cleaner with an extended wand to suck out the dust I can reach from my central air vents. To get more reach, tape a paper towel cardboard roll onto the wand. Clean the vent cover with mild soap and wet rag and replace.

I replace the filter every three months for starters. I also make sure the condensation trap has bleach and water mixture added twice a year to keep it from clogging. After that I vacuum the HVAC unit once a year. You should have it inspected once a year also.
