First, take a look up or down your chimney, either from the fireplace or the roof. Make sure there is nothing large blocking the chimney, like a squirrel nest. Then, buy a creosote cleaning log at any home improvement store. The chemicals released when you burn the cleaning log will cause the creosote in your chimney to burn away.
