How do I choose the sewing thread weight?

Answer by  bananaboat (321)

You choose the sewing thread size according to weight and type of fabric you are using. The lighter the fabric, the lighter and finer the thread and vice versa.

The standard sewing thread is 50 weight, and there are many other weights and uses for different types of thread. The plies are how many pieces of yarn were used to make the thread. Bigger projects can require a heavier thread weight around 100-120 weight.
