Check the internet or phone book for local stables, and attend one of their horseback riding lessons. Watch closely: Are the children happy and confident while riding? Is the instructor patient? Are the horses clean and gentle? Are safety measures in place (hard hats, etc.)? Finally, are the lessons affordable? If everything is "yes," you've found a good stable.

First, you want to look fopr a riding instructor who's teaching style matches your son's learning style. Observe several instructors as they teach a lesson, and watch to see how your son responds to each instructor. Perhaps a certain instructor will draw forth more enthusiasm and interest from your child.

Check out various stables and get recommendations from other people that are taking lessons. Observe how the horses are taken care of and if the barns are clean.

Ask the instructor about his/her qualifications, training, and experience. Observe lessons to see if the instructor interacts with students in a manner compatible with your child.

Visit a few yards and observe lessons, look closely at the horses as much as the instructor. Is the instructor calm, are the horses well cared for and well treated. Is the instructor able to clearly explain what it is that she wants you to achieve. Look for a qualified instructor and certified riding school

First you need to decide whether the lessons are English or Western. Then firs tthe site and talk to the instructors. Make the first year fun for your child. Then ask for references and talk to other partents at the stable and see what they think of the barn. Also, do the horses look well cared for?
