Essential to beginning horseback riding is developing a working relationship with the horse. This can be accomplished through quality time spent together, patience, kindess, understanding and knowledge of horse behaviours. Once on the horse good posture, including sitting up striaght, proper body alighnment and stirrup length, ensures proper balance.

In both english and western riding, you have to keep your heels down. Sit up straight and squeeze your thighs to maintain your balance.

Relaxation, flexibility, and muscular strength through your legs, back, and abdomen will be key to your progress as a riding student. Breathing exercises are also quite helpful.

First start off by accomplishing the mount, dismount and walk. When you have that done move on to faster speeds. I recommend you take a few lessons to help out.

The very basics are "Kick the horse to go" and pull back on the reigns to "whoa". The actual basics though, are good ground work, teaching the horse to do something on voice commands, and working up from there. There are 2 basic types of reigning to control the direction of a horse, neck reigning, and split reigning.
