Leyland Cypress are very fast growing everygreen trees commonly used as hedges. They require a lot of light for healthy growth. The only way to avoid browing is to ensure the tree is correctly shaped to a slender triangle, and ensure gaps between specimens are maintained.

Remove a selection of upper branches to allow for sunlight and air circulation to reach the lowest branches. If your tree has developed Needle Blight disease, apply at least 2 doses (one in beginning of June, one end of July) of Bordeaux mixture or liquid copper fungicide.

This tree though it could stand without water should not be left without water or it would be stressed leading to the attack of fungus that could cause brown needles.

Make sure the tree gets lots and lots of fertilizers. You can't overdo it with a Leyland Cypress. The brown needles are bad.

Seiridium is the disease that causes the needles to brown and fall off. Pruning the brown branches off will stop the spread of the disease, because the infection cannot spread back into the tree from the cut end. Seiridium can also be caused by drought conditions, so make sure to water the tree.

Prune the needles as soon as they turn brown and avoid overwatering the tree. Also be sure to prune any diseased branches as soon as they appear.
