While both Free Methodists and Lutherans practice the same tenants set forth from the Scriptures, the historical foundation of the beliefs differ. Opposition to slavery was the foundation on which Free Methodists were formed and publicly presented their beliefs. The Lutheran religion did not have a "free" branch.

Free Methodists and Lutherans are very much alike. They both baptize infants and believe that the Bible is the direct word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit. They both believe in the Trinity. Both are heavily involved in outreach ministries. Some Free Methodists are charismatic, which is not one of the gifts of the spirit Lutherans practice.
