Effects pedals electronically manipulate the sound of a guitar. The sound produced all depends on the pedal. In a typical, non studio setting, your guitar would plug into the input, and you would run a quarter inch cable from the output, into your amplifier. Standard effects pedals (or "stomp boxes") are usually powered using a 9V battery or adapter.

Effects pedals work by connecting them to your amplifier through another guitar jack. They are microchips, like a mini-computer that scrambles the sound into the given effect. When you step on the pedal the effect turns on, and when you press it again the effect turns off.
