How did Valentine's Day get started?

I'm interested in the history of it.

Because of a saint that lived in the times of the Roman Empire, which helped couples to get married in Christianity, hidden from the Christian-loathing Romans.

It became a saint's day in about 500 AD but it was not until the high middle ages (around 1200-1500) in Europe during the time of courtly romance that it became associated with lovers. Knights and ladies used it as a symbol for their love in stories of that period. So it is really a very long tradition.
