The Protestant Reformation led to a vast diversification in christian doctrine. The idea of religious tolerance not being meaningful during the 16th and 17th century, this led to the persecution of religious minorities, many of which settled in America. Religion also provided a pretext for the Conquistadors' invasions of America.

Religious events that spurred immigration to new lands would mainly be religious persecution. For example,Jews have been immigrating to Mexico since the Spanish Inquisition,to escape being forcibly converted to Catholicism. Some are openly Catholic, but practice Jewish rites in secret.Mexico City has one of the larger Jewish populations in Mexico.
