Philadelphia Cream Cheese was first made by William Lawrence in Chester, New York back in 1872. "Philadelphia" was added to the name in 1880 by a cheese distributor named C.D. Reynolds. At the end the city of Philadelphia was considered to be synonymous with good quality food, especially dairy products.

The American cream cheese was created by William Lawrence of Chester, New York, in 1872. Lawrence was trying unsuccessfully to make Neufchatel cheese at the time. 'Philadelphia' was included in the brand name in 1880, because the city of Philadelphia had a reputation at the time for high quality food. Some people use "Philadelphia" to refer to any cream cheese.
