Hormel was looking for a way to sell the leftover parts of pork. It was a great way to get meat to the men at war.

Spam was a product of neccessity during WWII, becoming increasingly popular during the depression. It was a combination of many different by products that has a typically long shelf life and a range of uses, it's become popular due to this.
