Washington was wildly popular after the Revolution and had been intimately involved with the Continental Congress, making him a natural choice for president. He was unanimously elected by the electoral college in 1789 and again in 1792, making him the only president to ever receive 100% of the vote. John Adams served as Vice-President before becoming the second president himself.
