There was not a traditional presidential election back then like the way we have today. The Founding Fathers appointed him president because of his attributes and the courage he had during the Revolution.

Washington was wildly popular after the Revolution and had been intimately involved with the Continental Congress, making him a natural choice for president. He was unanimously elected by the electoral college in 1789 and again in 1792, making him the only president to ever receive 100% of the vote. John Adams served as Vice-President before becoming the second president himself.
