It's quite common to notice such symptoms after any kind of surgery, not only back surgery. The trauma that the body goes through, but also the diet regime before and after the surgery are the reason for this.

I don't know the statistics about partial bowel obstructions after back surgery, but after any surgery there is an increased risk for a bowel obstruction and constipation. This is due to the pain medications, anesthesia, and decreased movement after the surgery. If this is something that deeply concerns you talk to your health care professional before the surgery

Any type of surgery or illness can change the normal function of the body's activity on a given day. It would be natural with the surgery, medications and anesthesia to have a change in bowel activity.
