How can you tell what type of chinchilla you have?

Well, you can tell by examining the coat. Is the coat thick and furry? Or is it thin? Also, you can look at whether or not your chinchilla has spikes or not.

There are basically only two types of chinchillas, with very little difference between the two. The domestic chinchilla is a chinchilla lanigera. They have a longer tail and are less husky than their wild cousins.

There are not different kinds of breeds of chinchillas like other animals. Instead, chinchillas are just differentiated by their color. Some of the basic colors are Standard, Black velvet, Beige, White, Ebony, Violet and Sapphire. They can be 1 or 2 colors or mosaic.

There are so many different types ,depending on the region they came from that this would be nearly impossible unless your Chinchilla came with " papers". I would suggest doing research on any markings it has and go from there. If your chinchilla came from a pet shop or breeder you may ask there and see if they know.

Ask someone who knows about chinchillas and the different kinds to tell you what kind you have. That is the most effective way of finding out.
